Hello Everyone!
It is day 18 of the 30-day-book-challenge, which means today I am going to be talking about a book that disappointed me. I’m going to get straight into it today and tell you that the book I have chosen for this prompt is the Ashes Trilogy by Isla J Bick. I bought this trilogy probably 2 years ago when I was really enjoying the dystopian genre and had just read the hunger games, the maze runner, divergent and other similar very popular books. I read the synopsis and thought it sounded along the same drift as the maze runner by James Dashner because it had to do with some sort of disease that had infected mankind. Some people were immune and others weren’t, but I was severely let down.
Maybe it was because I was comparing it to James Dashner who is incredibly good at writing dystopian novels with untrustworthy characters, but The Ashes Trilogy was kind of rubbish in my opinion. It started out alright, but I was never overly invested in any of the characters and I predicted a lot of what was going to happen. By the second book I wasn’t invested at all and my reading pace had slowed drastically, but by the 3rd book I just gave up. I DNFed the last book because I just didn’t care what happened to the characters.
The 2 things that I think really brought it down for me was one, the lack of plot and two the zombies. I was aware going into it that is was going to feature ‘zombie like’ creatures like The Maze Runner does in later books, but the creatures in the Ashes trilogy were just full on boring Zombies that didn’t really seem to have any reason to exist. There also seemed to be no real aim or goal that the characters were trying to get to other than ‘don’t die’. They weren’t really doing anything different to anyone else and I actually skipped to the end and read the epilogue, but it seems like there never was a resolution. If you’re into zombies, then maybe you would like the Ashes Trilogy, but I didn’t at all and is thoroughly disappointed me.
Have you read the Ashes Trilogy and if so what did you think of it? What book disappointed you? I’d love to know, so leave a comment down below or over on my Instagram (@theoriginalbookdragon) and we can have a chat!
Goodbye for now!
