This week I was reading What’s a girl gotta do? by Holly Bourne. First of all, Holly is an amazing author and deserves a lot more publicity for all of her books. She currently has 5 books and I have read two of them (What’s a girl gotta do? and Am I normal yet?), but I plan to read all of her books in the year to come particularly the 3rd book in the normal series ‘How hard can love be?’, but before I start telling you about the book I have just read I wanted to tell you about how I came across Holly Bourne.
I found her as an author through my amazing best friend. She was reading Am I normal yet? and like the amazing friend she is proceeding to wave it in my face telling me how awesome it was and that I should read it. I followed her advise and stole it from her for a week. I was not disappointed! I then went out and bought another of her books, which I have just gotten round to reading, and will be buying the next one at the soonest available opportunity. Now one with the review…
Long story short is just phenomenal. Holly Bourne is not afraid to write the truth and to put herself out there and that is what I love. her books are straight forward and to the point and she has her characters tackle real first world problems such as OCD, Sexism and Bullying. She writes the world how it is in its entirety and doesn’t eave out any of the nasty details.
As a teenage girl I encounter a lot of the same problems Lottie (the main character) does and seeing her work her way through the problems and stand up for herself and her friends is really inspiring. Maybe the world isn’t completely doomed after all. Another thing that I love about all of Holly Bourne’ characters is that they don’t fall into any stereotypes. they are completely individual and there are some incrediably strong well written female characters which even these days are quite hard to come by.
If you haven’t read Holly’s books yet then go and check them out, but otherwise that is all.
Goodbye for now!
