Hey guys, so today I am going to be telling you all about another book by Jeanne Ryan. I did a book review on her other book (Nerve) and since I loved that one so much when I found out that she had another book I just had to buy it!
This book is based around a girl called Aislyn who has crippling shyness. It is so bad that she cannot do anything! The basic joist of the book is that in this world gene therapy is very well developed and is a massive part of science. The main gene therapy company is looking to help people with cancer, HIV, Cystitis Fibrosis and many more. CF is the one that is important to the story because Aislyn’s little brother has it. During all of this one of the doctors goes rogue and comes up with a gene therapy (Charisma) that can ‘cure’ shyness. The doctor in question then hands out this Charisma, but it of course goes horribly wrong and unfortunately not everyone lives through it which was heart-breaking to read.
The plot aside though what I think was really good about this book was how the author showed everyone’s reactions to those that were ‘infected’. Everyone avoided them even though it is only something that is sexually transmitted like HIV.; I liked this detail because it is so true to reality. If you have a disability or are unfortunate enough to suffer from something as awful as cancer or HIV, then you get treated very differently. The book also gave a nod in the direction of mental illness’s such as anxiety and how they can cause people A LOT of problems. Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it isn’t real.
Anyway, thanks for reading and I would recommend all of Jeanne Ryan’s books.
Goodbye for now!
